Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Ralph —

My mom, Dawn Hochsprung, was the principal at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Six months ago today, she was shot and killed in her school, along with five of her coworkers and 20 of her students.

In the weeks and months after that horrible day, lawmakers from across the country told us, the families of the victims, that they’d take action to make our communities safer. What we found out is that, for some of our members of Congress, those were empty promises.

And in those six months, thousands more people have been killed by guns.

I’ve been doing everything I can to reach out to members of Congress. But my voice isn’t enough. Today, on the six-month anniversary of Newtown, every single person who cares about reducing gun violence in America needs to recommit to this fight.

More than 1.4 million Americans have said they’re with us in the fight to reduce gun violence — add your name today.

In her last minutes, Mom was just as brave and caring as I knew her to be. After telling everyone to hide, she went running into the hallway, saw the gunman, yelled and lunged at him in an effort to protect the school she loved.

I miss her every second of every day. I’m getting married in just a few weeks — to a guy she was rooting for, in a dress we picked out together — but because a dangerous man got his hands on a gun, my mom won’t be there to see it.

I’m still grieving — and I’m not alone. On average, 33 Americans are killed by a gun every single day. That’s 33 new families a day who mourn like I do.

If a background check saves even one life, and keeps even one family from hurting like this, then this fight will all be worth it. I think my mom would like to know that the tragedy that fell on Newtown meant that another tragedy could be stopped before it even started.

I’m asking you to join me today, six months after that horrible day, to keep this fight going — take action for my mom, Dawn, and the 25 other people who we lost in December.

Say you’re with us today:

Colorado State University, USDA Create Online Tool to Estimate Greenhouse Gas Reductions through Conservation Agriculture

FORT COLLINS – U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced the release of COMET-Farm™, a free online tool created by Colorado State University and the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service that will help producers calculate how much carbon their land’s soil and vegetation can remove from the atmosphere.

The tool also will help producers calculate and understand how land management decisions impact energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.

“With the help of NRCS’ conservation technology and efforts, agriculture and forestry have the unique opportunity to remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it permanently in healthy soils,” Vilsack said. “COMET-Farm is a user-friendly tool that will make it easy for any conservation-minded landowner to evaluate their soil’s carbon-holding potential.”

To use the tool, producers input information about their land, including location, soil characteristics, crop rotations, tillage, fertilization and other management practices. COMET-Farm™ then estimates carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emission reductions associated with conservation practices for cropland, pasture, rangeland, livestock operations and energy.

“The unique thing about COMET-Farm is that it allows the people who know the most about what is happening on the land – the farmers – to use very sophisticated technology to quantify greenhouse gas emissions but with an easy-to-use online system,” said Keith Paustian, professor in CSU’s Department of Soil and Crop Sciences and leader of the COMET-Farm™ development team.

With record-breaking concentrations of carbon dioxide now in the atmosphere, agricultural conservation – especially soil and crop management – can help remove carbon dioxide from the air. Historically, conversion of native lands to crop production using intensive tillage has resulted in significant losses of soil carbon. According to USDA’s Agriculture and Forestry Greenhouse Gas Inventory, conservation tillage and other practices have helped reduce these losses and, in many cases, reverse them. Agricultural soils present an opportunity to absorb a significant amount of carbon. Carbon-rich soils are healthy soils, and healthy soils are more productive and resilient to extreme weather events, such as drought.

“Producers benefit, the environment benefits, and long-term agricultural productivity benefits,” Vilsack said. “Through programs and other innovations offered by NRCS, our country has an opportunity to take an aggressive stance on reducing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while arming our nation’s agricultural sector with proactive climate change adaptation strategies.”

COMET-Farm™ is applicable to all agricultural lands in the lower 48 states. The tool is available for use at www.comet-farm.com. Future model releases are planned by USDA as new methods for calculating greenhouse gas emissions become available.

State Agency Taking Steps to Make Sure Polluters Pay

By Annie Pham

The California state agency responsible for cleaning up contaminated sites, ranging from former military bases to mom-and-pop dry cleaners, has recently disclosed that it failed to collect cleanup costs from polluters resulting in taxpayers footing the bill over the years.

The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), under the leadership of Director Debbie Raphael, conducted an internal investigation that exposed the department’s failure to recoup $185 million in cleanup costs.   The problem began and persisted long before Raphael was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown in 2011.  Read More

We Want YOU: Join Our Lobby Day Ranks

By Kathryn Phillips

To have any influence on legislation—especially on issues that try to rein in well-heeled polluters—Sierra Club California relies on its volunteer activists.

When a legislator hears from someone living in the district, that legislator pays attention.

That’s why we ask Club members to join us in Sacramento each August for our lobby day. One sincere and informed environmentally concerned face from back home can trump a polluter’s money and influence.

Join us in Sacramento in mid-August and be part of a team that will help Sierra Club California pass our priority legislation and defeat bad bills.

The day-and-a-half event provides an opportunity for you to watch what our staff does all year round, lobby your legislators, and meet like-minded activists from all over California.

On Sunday, August 18, starting at around noon, our advocacy team will train you on how to lobby and brief you on our priority bills so that you can effectively advocate for them.  On Monday, August 19, you will work the halls of the Capitol as teams, with meetings scheduled from morning through the afternoon.  Read More and Register

On May 21, the U.S. Senate blocked an amendment to reinstate $4.1 billion for food stamps.

Walkswithfriends, please join Daily Kos and the Campaign for America’s Future by signing our petition to the 28 Senate Democrats who last week voted to cut food stamps—demanding they put low-income families ahead of corporate welfare. Click here to sign.

On May 21, the U.S. Senate blocked an amendment to reinstate $4.1 billion for food stamps.

But we can’t just blame GOP obstructionism. Twenty-eight Democratic senators joined all voting Republicans in putting corporate welfare for a handful of crop insurance companies ahead of low-income families struggling to make ends meet, by voting down this amendment.

As House Republicans push even more draconian cuts to food stamps, now is the time to take a stand. Please join Daily Kos and the Campaign for America’s Future by signing our petition to the 28 Senate Democrats, demanding they put low-income families ahead of corporate welfare.

Keep fighting,

Petition: Justice for victims of sexual assault in the military

Dear Ralph/ WesterlyPost.com

We might not like to think that our men and women in uniform are at risk of being sexually assaulted when they volunteer to serve our country — but the ugly truth is, it happens far too often.

This month, the Department of Defense estimated that more than 26,000 cases of sexual assault took place in the military in 2012.

It gets worse. The year before, only 10 percent of reported cases – only a fraction of the total – ever resulted in a trial where the victims could find justice. A stunning 62 percent of victims felt like they were retaliated against for coming forward.

The system is broken. And we need to fix it.

Click here to join me and Senators Barbara Boxer (CA), Kirsten Gillibrand (NY) and Richard Blumenthal (CT) as we fight to fix our military’s response to sexual assault.

Unbelievably, even if a jury does issue a conviction, senior military officers with no legal training — and, often, glaring conflicts of interest — can throw that conviction out with no explanation, no recourse, and no accountability.

Our military men and women deserve better.

Senators Boxer, Gillibrand, Blumenthal and I are working to bring justice to victims of sexual assault in the military. Help us get this done by signing our petition.

Sexual assault is a heinous crime. Members of our armed forces who are victims have a right to justice. And for that to happen, the military policy that too often lets offenders off the hook has to change.

Thanks for taking action.

Al  P.S.: Senators Boxer, Gillibrand, Blumenthal and I could really use your help in this fight. Please click here to take action today, and let’s take a stand for military victims of sexual assault.
