Two of the leading organizations in the fight against gun violence are joining forces: Mayors Against Illegal Guns is merging with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.
Moms Demand Action has had an extraordinary year — growing from a simple Facebook group started by a mother of five in Indianapolis to the strongest grassroots voice in our movement, with chapters in all 50 states.
Boston’s Mayor Tom Menino and I — along with just 13 other mayors — founded a bi-partisan coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns on an April morning seven years ago. Since then, our membership has grown to more than 1,000 mayors and 1.5 million grassroots supporters, and we’ve built an unparalleled team of policy experts, community organizers, and law enforcement professionals.
By joining forces, our two organizations will create a nationwide movement to save lives and change the way our country thinks about gun violence. Americans understand that we can both protect the Second Amendment while also protecting public safety. But the gun lobby doesn’t, so it’s our job to take them on — and stand up for common sense.
Winning the battle against gun violence will require the hard work of mayors and moms, law enforcement officials, faith leaders, gun owners, elected officials, gun violence survivors, and supporters like you.
Today is a turning point in that battle. This new partnership positions us to succeed, if Americans like you step forward to help. Please join us in saving lives and making our communities safer.
Thank you for your commitment to reducing gun violence — and for becoming part of this historic new effort.
