HSU Women’s Basketball
ARCATA – What was missing two nights ago was found Saturday night by the Lumberjacks. A key first half run coupled with balanced scoring and better success from the floor produced the first women’s basketball victory in Lumberjack Arena of the hoops season.
Trailing 11-10 nine minutes into the contest, HSU went on a 10-0 run over a three-minute stretch capped by eight-straight Danielle Gaumer points including two three-pointers for a lead, 20-11, over Cal State San Bernardino it would not give up the rest of the night.
The Jacks (4-2) used some solid outside shooting in the second half with four triples by Jae Shin to keep the Coyotes at bay the second half on the way to the 73-61 victory to even their California Collegiate Athletic Association record to 1-1.
“We had some foul trouble and injuries, but we received some good bench quality minutes from Dani (Gaumer), Jessica Johnson and on down the line. They all came in and gave the needed boost to us tonight,” said HSU head coach Joddie Gleason.
Gaumer and Shin were two of the five Jacks in double figures in the balanced attack and helped the home club shoot much better overall compared to two nights ago (45 to 38-percent).
“We have some strong shooters,” noted Gleason. “Fortunately we hit them tonight. We need to do a good job of what are good three-pointers are and we are forced three-pointers.”
The HSU improved shooting was even more pronounced from long-range where they drilled 11 of 24 tries for 45.8-percent, including six of 12 in the second stanza, compared to only four of 19 tries in Thursday night’s loss.
“We felt we made some good plays for easy buckets and would have been nice to open it up more,” explained the Jacks coach.
Point guard Kersey Wilcox led the charge once again with 18 points on six of 12 from the floor to go with six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Megan Shields powered the home inside game with 17 points on seven of nine attempts and nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
Shin downed her four triples in eight tries for her 12 points with Gaumer totaling 11 tallies and six caroms.
Senior Kelly Kime rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10. Elle Anderson handed out five assists and pulled down six boards.
CSU San Bernardino (1-5/0-3 CCAA) received 23 points on 10 of 21 shooting from Alexcia Mack. Jazzmyn Davis added 15 points and 13 rebounds.
After Gaumer keyed the the Coyotes pulled back to within five points, 22-17, before the Jacks would take a 34-26 margin to the half.
Shin hit her first three-pointer in Lumberjack Arena to begin the second half. HSU made its first three from the floor with a second Shin triple as the third shot for the largest lead of the game, 42-28
“I had a hard night versus UC San Diego behind the arc, but everyone kept telling me to just keep shooting. It was probably the happiest I have been about a shot of the season for me and a big relief (to make the first three-pointer),” said Shin. “We did a good job with our composure and pulled away.”
CSU San Bernardino made one final push with Davis and Mack back-to-back shots to pull to within six, 42-36.
Wilcox would make sure the short-lived visiting run would not last with a pair of wide-open three-pointers on consecutive offensive trips for a 48-38 score.
“It was nice to have the lead most of the game, take care of the ball and get smart shots,” added Wilcox. “When you are hitting you want to keep hitting the right person and we did that tonight.”
The Jacks would keep the Coyotes at bay the rest of the way to a 73-61 final.
“It is key for us defensively to continue to get better and not let our opponent run what they want to run and our team responded this way tonight. We just have to board a little better,” concluded Gleason.
HSU will have a week to work on its board work and other areas. The Jacks will have only a single game next week as they start a Saturday home-and-home series against the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona on the road Dec. 14 at 5:30 p.m.
